Six kinds of cover, one plan that fits

Most people need a combination of these. We'll help you work out which ones matter for you, and how much cover makes sense.

Life insurance

Pays a lump sum if you die or are diagnosed with a terminal illness, so your family can pay off debts, cover living costs and plan for the future.

Worth considering if others rely on your income, or you have a mortgage or other debts.

Health insurance

Helps pay for private medical treatment, specialist consultations and surgery, so you can be treated sooner and with more choice.

Worth considering if you want faster access to treatment without relying on public waiting lists.

Trauma and critical illness

Pays a lump sum if you're diagnosed with a serious condition covered by your policy, such as some cancers, heart attack or stroke. You can use it however you need while you recover.

Worth considering if you'd want financial breathing room to focus on getting better.

Income and mortgage protection

Pays a monthly benefit if illness or injury stops you from working. Income protection covers up to an agreed portion of your income; mortgage protection is set to cover your mortgage or rent payments, so you can stay in your home.

Worth considering if your household depends on your pay to meet everyday costs, or you have a mortgage and limited savings to fall back on.

Total and permanent disability

Pays a lump sum if illness or injury means you're permanently unable to work again, helping to clear debts and fund future care. For some specialists and professionals, certain policies can assess a claim against your ability to work in your own occupation rather than any occupation. Whether this is available depends on the insurer, the policy definition, your occupation, the policy terms and the circumstances of the claim, so not every policy provides it.

Worth considering if you want a financial safety net if you could never return to work, or your income relies on specialist skills.

Redundancy cover

Pays a monthly benefit for a limited period, usually up to six months, if you're made involuntarily redundant. It gives you time to find your next job while keeping up with the mortgage or rent.

Worth considering if you're a full-time employee and want a buffer on top of your savings.

Making your premiums work over time

Premiums usually rise as you get older, one of the main reasons people let good cover lapse. How your premiums are structured can make a real difference to what you pay over the life of a policy.

Stepped
Start lower and generally rise each year. Can suit shorter-term needs, like a mortgage that shrinks over time.
Level
Fixed for a set period, for example to age 65. Higher at first, but can cost less over the long run if you keep the cover.
A mix
Many people split their cover, matching each part to how long they'll need it. We can review the split as things change.
